With much of the area enjoying a bye week, Winona continued its rise in District 18-2A with a 48-3 victory against Sabine.
C.J. Petty and Bryan Waters played major roles in the dominant performance, combining for more than 300 yards rushing and four touchdowns. The duo was also impressive on defense, helping improve the Wildcats to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in district.
Petty finished with 172 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way. The 5-9, 175-pounder began the scoring with a 92-yard run less than three minutes into the game, and then began the fourth quarter with a 39-yard touchdown.
Petty also had a 65-yard kickoff return to set up a score.
Meanwhile, Waters ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns after being named Homecoming King during pregame ceremonies. His scores weren't from long distances (from 1 and 14 yards out), but were equally effective.
Winona, which is going for its first playoff appearance since 1994, returns to action this week at Union Grove. Union Grove (3-2, 1-1) is one of four teams in the district with a winning record, but fell to White Oak, 49-7, on Friday night.
