John Tyler Wins Another Thriller
By HAROLD WILSON
Staff Writer

LEWISVILLE -- The Cujo creed -- never quit, never die -- continues to apply to the 2008 John Tyler Lions.

For the second straight week John Tyler made a thrilling comeback, coming up with the final three scores to stun Lewisville, 27-20, in overtime Friday night in front of an on-their feet crowd of nearly 8,000 at Goldsmith Stadium.

Ky'Ordric Black scored from 1-yard out with 57 seconds left in regulation to help tie the game, and Jeremy Johnson found the end zone on a 6-yard keeper on the first possession of overtime for the eventual game-winner, giving JT (3-2) their third straight victory.

"Cujo never quits, never dies," said Johnson, explaining JT's recent turnaround and last two comebacks. "We just know that in our heart."

Antjuan Lee tripped up Lewisville quarterback Jordan Dotson for a one-yard loss on fourth-and-six from the JT 8 to climax the affair and ignite another week of jubilation for the Lions, who scored with 16 seconds left in a 28-24 win over Wichita Falls Rider last week.

JT trailed 20-10 with 13 minutes left, but pulled to within a touchdown on a 24-yard field goal from Jesse Diaz, his second three-pointer of the game.

The JT defense kept Lewisville out the end zone the final 20-plus minutes. The Lions left the field with a one-sided advantage in total yards -- -386-272 -- and benefited Diaz' two field goals that salvaged points at the end of stalled drives.

"It's a team effort," Dereck Rush said. "The special teams stepped up when they had to, the defense stepped up when they had to, and the offense stepped up when they had to."

Johnson rushed for a team-high 87 yards and the one TD on 16 carries, highlighted by the scoring run and 18-yard scramble on fourth-and-11 to keep alive the game-tying drive. Johnson completed 13 of 24 passes for a career-high 156 yards, including a 34-yard strike to Dominic Ward one play after the fourth-down conversion to put JT at the Lewisville 4-yard line. Three plays later, Black broke through off tackle on the left side, and Diaz delivered the equalizer straight through the uprights with 57 ticks showing.

"We learned from last week to play until all zeros are on the clock," said Black, who totaled 129 all-purpose yards and two TDs.

After JT tied the game, Lewisville rushed right downfield, reaching the Lions' 18 before Ashton Dorsey appeared to block Will Atterberry's 35-yard field goal attempt with one second remaining to force the extra period.

Atterberry accounted for eight of Lewisville's point-total, hitting on field goals of 40 and 42 to keep Lewisville from trailing into overtime.

Dotson did most of Lewisville's offensive damage, gaining 115 yards on 21 totes, including a 17-yard keeper on the Farmers' opening possession to cap an eight-play, 82-yard drive.

The Lions answered with an 82-yard drive of their own and evened the game on Johnson's 4-yard flicker to Black early in the second quarter.

The Farmers finished their third possession with Atterberry's 40-yard kick to lead by three at the intermission, but the game proved far from over. In the end, the Lions left elated after ending a two-game drought against the Farmers' program.

"It goes back to finding a way to win," said Rush, whose team gets a bye next week before opening district at home on Oct. 10 against Mesquite Horn. "That's one of our mottos - that and finishing football games."
