Prior to the season, Edgewood head coach Ryan Simmons knew the Bulldogs' chances for success relied heavily on their passing game.

On Friday, quarterback Weston Jameson continued to give Simmons reason for optimism. The senior arguably performed better than any other quarterback in school history, piloting the Bulldogs to a 48-40 victory against intra-county rival Canton.

Out of Edgewood's spread formation, Jameson completed 35 of 54 passes for 482 yards and seven touchdowns. The yardage and touchdowns were school records, Simmons said.

"Weston's a remarkable young man," Simmons said. "And then to watch him do what he did on the field (Friday), it was probably one of the better performances I've ever seen."

Jameson (6-0, 180) is the key to the Bulldogs' offense, which is in its second year under Simmons. He's able to make the correct calls at the line of scrimmage, and has the ability to make long-, mid- and short-range passes with accuracy.

Against Canton, he made 64.8 percent of his passes and was spotless in the interception category. All that helped the Bulldogs improve to 1-1 on the season, a week after falling by 23 points to Harmony.

"He's the leader, and he leads by example," Simmons said. "He works hard every day. He comes out and expects everybody else to work hard. � (Offense) was going to be the strength of our team, with it being the second year in this offense. He's the reason; he's the one who makes it work."

The energy and dedication Simmons gives the team has been inherited by other players, Simmons said. On the season, Jameson is 67-of-105 for 778 yards and 11 touchdowns.

"The offensive line loves to block for him, because they know he is going to do his part," Simmons said. "That relationship has worked out pretty well for us. The receivers know he's going to get the ball there. The coaches know he's going to make the right check. He's the right guy for us."

Other Notable Performances:

Charlie Moore, Bullard: The senior quarterback was all over the field, completing 14 of 20 passes for 214 yards and two scores, and rushing for 148 yards and a score in the Panthers' 38-21 win against Palestine Westwood.

Trey Metoyer, Whitehouse: The sophomore receiver caught eight passes for 220 yards and a touchdown in the Wildcats' 52-33 loss to Sulphur Springs.

Darrius Rogers, Edgewood: The junior receiver caught 14 passes for 236 yards and four touchdowns.

Jacobbey Sinches, Mineola: The junior running back rushed for 260 yards and three touchdowns, including a key score in the fourth quarter to push the Yellow Jackets over Quitman, 34-27.

Matthew Tucker, Chapel Hill: The senior running back ran for a career-high 337 yards and five touchdowns in the Bulldogs' 52-30 win against Kaufman.
