KILGORE -- Coming off a successful home opener against Independence, Kan., the Tyler Junior College football team now turns to a much more familiar opponent.
The Apaches (1-0) and Kilgore College (0-1) will meet on the gridiron for the 104th time today at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium.
Kickoff of the non-conference game will be 7 p.m. As usual, halftime will be a treat for fans as the Apache Belles and Rangerettes will perform.
As members of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference, both TJC and Kilgore opened their seasons last weekend against teams from the Jayhawk Conference in Kansas.
The Apaches controlled Independence Community College, 28-14, in a game played up the road from Tyler in Lindale.
TJC was productive in all three phases of the game.
Offensively, sophomore tailback Ira Duckworth had 134 yards on 21 carries as the Apaches rushed for 200-plus as a team.
Defensively, the Apaches forced Independence to punt 10 times while limiting the Pirates to 196 total yards of offense.
On special teams, University of Houston transfer Teric Williams set up two of TJC's four scores with long returns.
Williams' four longest returns were of 67 and 20 yards on kickoffs, and 40 and 31 on punts.
That production earned the former Paul Pewitt High School standout the Special Teams Player of the Week honor from the SWJCFC.
Duckworth's performance was also noted by the conference. Joining them was TJC defensive tackle Jonathan Hatton, a John Tyler graduate.
Hatton scored a defensive touchdown on a 5-yard interception return of a tipped ball that gave TJC the lead for good in the first quarter.
Hatton was also credited with three tackles and one sack on the night.
The Apaches didn't get much out of their passing game. The starter, Stephen Schwark, was 0-for-6 but did have two runs totaling 28 yards.
True freshman Vincent McNeil of Dallas Roosevelt provided a second-half spark with two completions and some key runs.
Kilgore did not fare as well in its season opener played at home.
The 14th-ranked Rangers, who played for the conference championship last year and earned a bowl berth, are coming off a 40-20 loss to Fort Scott, Kan.
Kilgore trailed 21-7 at halftime but had a chance to draw even in the third quarter if not for a missed extra point.
The PAT was from 50 yards after the Rangers were accessed two 15-yard penalties after scoring a touchdown.
Fort Scott dominated the remainder of the game as it outscored Kilgore 19-0.
The Rangers, which had questions at quarterback entering the season, ended up playing All-America tight end Woody McClendon under center.
McClendon was 7-of-12 passing for 102 yards and one touchdown.
The running game was handled by sophomore LaRon Elmer, who had 124 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown.
Smoke Signals: Kilgore swept the season series last year. The Rangers won the non-conference meeting, 34-24, in Tyler. Kilgore dominated the conference matchup, 42-17, in October.
