September 4: Remembering Mrs. Hall
I hope East Texans will take a moment to reflect on the Ralph Hall family as they adjust to the passing of Mary Ellen Hall last week. Mary Ellen Hall had deep roots in East Texas, as her grandparents and great grandparents were natives of this area. Ralph and Mary Ellen Hall were married for over 63 years. They set a great example for Washington D.C. leaders and for all Americans. Though Mary Ellen was always behind the scenes, she was a very intelligent person who supported her husband throughout his career. Ralph Hall served for many years as a Democrat from Rockwall. When his district became a predominantly Republican district, Mr. Hall was still elected as a Democrat because his values transcended party lines. When Congressman Hall decided to change parties, I have been told Mary Ellen was hesitant to leave the party of her ancestors but she trusted her husband's judgment and supported his decision.
A few examples like the Halls are the only argument against term limits for Congress.
In these troubled times, America needs principled guidance of leaders such as Ralph and Mary Ellen Hall.
