Pleasant Weather On The Way For East Texas
After three days of putting up with Gustav, a pleasant and welcome change in the area's weather is coming.
Cloudy and unseasonably cool temperatures were present in the area Wednesday, along with intermittent light rain.
The heaviest storm amounts in East Texas were between two and four inches in the tier of counties along the Louisiana and Arkansas borders.
Farther east in Louisiana, very heavy amounts fell: over 16 inches in Bunky, more than 10 inches in Monroe, and nearly 10 inches in Alexandria.
Tropical Depression Gu-stav was over Southwest Arkansas Wednesday afternoon, and was beginning to slowly move northeastward, His speed was forecast to accelerate overnight, finally taking him out of range of East Texas.
Rainfall amounts in most of the area Wednesday were under one-half inch.
The exception was over the extreme northeast, were three or more inches fell. Most of this came from midnight into late-morning.
Storm totals over the remainder of the region were between one-half inch and two inches. Tyler's storm total was 1.19 inches, of which 0.50 inch fell Wednesday.
Winds on Wednesday were westerly at 10-20 mph with occasionally higher gusts to near 30 mph.
These winds were forecast to decrease overnight, and become northwesterly Thursday, shifting into the north for Friday and Saturday at 5-15 mph.
Temperatures ran about 5 degrees cooler than on Tuesday, and about 10 degrees below normal.
Low readings came at mid-day over the north and central, and were from near 70 to the middle 70s.
High readings were just after midnight over the north and central, and were from the lower 70s to middle 80s in the southwest.
Tyler's high temperature of 73 came at 1:00 a.m., with the day's low of 70 at 4:13 p.m.
Tuesday's high of 79 equaled the record low daily maximum temperature, first set in 1979. Wednesday's high is not a record; another hurricane in 1973 held the day's high to 66.
The afore-mentioned pleasant change is in the form of a cold front, which will be moving through the area overnight.
This will bring winds into the northwest, and result in much drier air.
Low readings through Sunday should run in the pleasant 60s, with afternoon high temperatures warming to around 90 by the weekend.
Another cold front should become stationary near the area Sunday, and a front move through the area at mid-week.
The result will be continued near to below normal temperatures.
