UT Tyler Women's Soccer Team Picks Up Second Victory
The UT Tyler women's soccer team picked up its second victory of the year Monday defeating Oklahoma City 2-0 in Shreveport. The Patriots finished 2-0 at the 2008 LSU-Shreveport Invitational and did not allow a goal in the season's opening week.
Amanda Thomas and Sonya Gomez each scored within a three-minute span in the first half to build an early lead. Goalkeeper Sam Fraser and the Patriots defense did the rest. Fraser's five saves helped her to her second straight shutout.
UT Tyler hosts No. 23 Trinity in the team's home opener Friday.
A pair of Patriots earned player of the week honors in the American Southwest Conference. Sophomore Sarah Hankla of the women's cross country team was named runner of the week and women's soccer goalkeeper Sam Fraser earned defensive player of the week.
Hankla (Grace Community) finished first among Division III runners Friday at the Bear Twilight Invitational 4K in Waco. Overall, she came in 48th place, turning in a time of 16:37.39.
Fraser (Lindale) turned in two shutouts for the Patriots over the weekend as the women's soccer team opened the season with wins over Oklahoma Christian, 1-0, and Oklahoma City, 2-0. Fraser made eight saves in 180 minutes of play.
