How does All Saints celebrate consecutive state finals appearances and beginning this season 7-1?
By going to Disney World, of course.
The Lady Trojans competed at the KSA Fall Classic last week, held at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla. For three days, All Saints battled teams from New York, Wisconsin, Arizona, California, New Jersey and Alaska.
The Lady Trojans competed at the KSA Fall Classic last week, held at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla. For three days, All Saints battled teams from New York, Wisconsin, Arizona, California, New Jersey and Alaska.
On Saturday, All Saints was the lone unbeaten team still standing as the Lady Trojans captured the KSA Fall Classic Championship.
"The team from Wisconsin and the team from California were very good, and I had honestly not seen an All Saints team play that well before," said head coach Cristy O'Bannon about her teams' play.
Of the 10 teams competing, All Saints was the only Texas representative. In a round-robin format, All Saints played the remaining nine teams with three matches per day.
When not on the court, the Lady Trojans were at the park. Staying at the All-Star resort, O'Bannon said they tried to enjoy as much of Disney World as time allowed.
"We had a couple hours each afternoon to do the theme parks, to just go and have fun. We did as much as we could as well as play a volleyball tournament. It was really a win, win situation."
The Lady Trojans played what turned out to be their three toughest matches Thursday.
All Saints began with Lodi High School in Wisconsin. The two teams went back and forth for four long games until the Lady Trojans emerged with a 20-25, 32-30, 25-22, 16-25, 15-13 victory.
All Saints then took on Kellis High School from Arizona and needed five games to win, 25-21, 25-12, 20-25, 25-8.
That left Ventura High School from California. This match, like the victory over Lodi, needed five games. Again it was All Saints that came away with a win, 12-25, 25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 15-11.
"Our first day was the hardest, but I think the girls kind of bonded a little in the first match because it was so tough," O'Bannon said. "I think the whole trip as a whole will help us."
All Saints didn't lose another game in any of its remaining six matches, taking down: West Windsor New Jersey (25-22, 25-17, 25-20), Bronx John F. Kennedy, NY (25-7, 25-9, 25-10), Chugiak Alaska (25-17, 25-13- state rules mandate Alaska teams only play best-of-three matches), Richmondville Cobleskill, NY (25-8, 25-10, 25-15), and Cardinal Spellman, NY (25-11, 25-7, 25-13).
O'Bannon wanted to thank everyone who helped out with fund raisers as All Saints raised enough money to cover all expenses.
The Lady Trojans next compete in the Brownsboro tournament at 9 a.m. Thursday and face Bullard in their home opener at 6:30 p.m. Friday at All Saints Sports Complex.
