Alto Dealing With Rare Loss
By SHANE STARK
Staff Writer

The Alto football team's 28-game winning streak came to an abrupt end Friday night. A pair of unbeaten seasons became only a memory when San Augustine shocked the Yellowjackets, 26-7.

Although No. 29 would've been gladly accepted, the team is remaining positive as it looks ahead. Up next is an opportunity to begin a new winning streak.

"We're disappointed in the loss; the first one in a while," said head coach Keith Gardner, whose team outscored San Augustine a combined 83-0 in 2006-07. "But the kids, during the ballgame, battled hard. We just have to hang onto the football more and quit turning the ball over."

Two-time defending Class 1A Division I champion Alto, which fell from No. 1 to No. 9 in this week's Associated Press poll, had five turnovers in its first setback since the 2005 playoffs. Injuries (both halfbacks were out) and mental errors also proved costly for the Yellowjackets, who begin their home schedule Friday night against Garrison.

"It wasn't a shocked feeling," Gardner said. "We knew what we had to do. We had to keep going; we've pulled out games like that before. You can't make those mistakes and beat good people."

Following the game, Gardner addressed the team as usual. He urged them to get in better shape and eliminate mistakes, but reminded them it was only a non-district loss.

As for the winning streak, "It was great," Gardner said. "There was no doubt about it; we would have liked to extend the streak to 29."

Meanwhile, there was movement throughout the AP poll. One team that ascended the poll was Alto district rival Cayuga (1-0), which moved up to No. 6.

In 4A, Longview (0-1) fell to No. 9 after losing to Class 5A state-ranked Allen.

In 3A, Gilmer (1-0) moved up to No. 9 following its commanding win against Jasper.

In 2A, Arp (1-0) moved up two spots to No. 4.
