Arp Places Second in Silver Bracket of Tyler Volleyball Tourney
Kandace Sipes and Mallory Roberts earned all-tournament berths as the Arp Lady Tigers finished second in the Silver Bracket of the Tyler Invitational Volleyball Tournament Saturday at Robert E. Lee High School.
Arp won over Spring Hill (21-25, 25-12, 25-15) and Pleasant Grove (25-23, 25-22) before falling to Groesbeck in the final (25-22, 25-20).
Standouts for Arp were Sipes (44 kills, 7 aces, 23 digs, 8 blocks, 12 service points), Kelsey Allen (8 kills, 3 aces, 36 digs, 15 service points), Latrice Greenhouse (5 kills, 6 aces, 10 digs, 2 blocks, 25 service points), Alex Holland (36 digs, 1 kill, 3 assists, 4 aces, 9 service points), Mallory Roberts (38 assists, 4 aces, 10 digs, 16 service points, 2 aces), Kari Kuykendall (9 digs, 2 kills, 8 service points) and Ravon Wofford (8 digs).
The Lady Tigers play Palestine and Rusk in a dual meet Tuesday in Rusk.
Lee Plays Hallsville In VB
The Robert E. Lee volleyball team goes on the road today to battle Hallsville at 6:30 p.m. at Hallsville High School.
The Lady Raiders (19-2) were denied a second consecutive tournament title Saturday as REL fell to Richardson in the championship match. REL lost in three sets (25-23, 20-25, 25-22), despite a strong performance by senior Sarah Sivertson, who finished with 12 kills, 14 assists, three blocks and six aces.
JT Plays Two In VB
John Tyler is scheduled to host a tri-match with Carthage and Mabank today at the Lions Den.
The Lady Lions are set to play Carthage first at 4:30 p.m. The two road teams meet in the middle match, with JT taking on Mabank in the finale.
JT is coming off an appearance in the Tyler Invitational, where the Lady Lions (9-10) lost to Corsicana in the consolation bracket, but not before matching last year's win-total.
Following the two matches, JT continues�a Tuesday-Friday schedule through the regular season -- starting with a contset Friday at Longview, and ones to follow on the road with Lindale, Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis, Whitehouse, Kilgore and Nacogdoches.
The Lady Lions open district against Robet E. Lee on Friday, Sept. 26 at home.
UT Tyler Volleyball Goes 3-1 In Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The UT Tyler Tyler volleyball team started its season off with a 3-1 record at the Rhodes College Invitational Tournament.
The Patriots notched victories over Randolph (Va.), Concordia (Texas) and St. Catharine (Ky.). The only blemish on the weekend came in a tough 3-1 loss to Millsaps (Miss.) on Sunday.
The 3-1 record marks the best start for the Patriots in program history. The victory over Concordia is UT Tyler's first win over the Tornadoes since the 2006 season.
On Saturday, the Patriots opened their season with a 3-0 win over Division III Randolph, 25-12, 25-16, 25-20. Freshman Amanda Hanson (Spring,) led UT Tyler in the match with six kills, while senior Megan McCarty (Kaufman) led her team in both digs (15) and service aces (3).
In the second match of the day, UT Tyler defeated American Southwest Conference rival Concordia 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 26-24).
Freshman Danika Waldrep (Arlington) led the Patriots in digs with 25, while McCarty chipped in for 20. Freshman Liz Bartleson (Burlington, Wis.) posted 13 attacks in the match.
Amanda Hanson and freshman Aerial Longino (Alvarado) combined for nine blocks.
On Sunday, the Patriots fell to Millsaps 3-1 (26-24, 25-13, 19-25, 25-18). In the final match of the invitational, the Patriots defeated NAIA member St. Catharine, 3-0 (25-21, 25-7, 25-18).
Senior Ashley Montalvo (Blooming Grove) took control defensively for the Patriots by posting 17 digs.
Sophomore Whitney Clements (Flint) and junior Cristy Meredith (Amarillo) split the duties at setter on the weekend as Clements posted 52 set assists, while Meredith had 47.
On Friday and Saturday, the Patriots will host the 2008 Azalea Orthopedics UT Tyler Fall Volleyball Invitational. UT Tyler will open their tournament on Friday against Ottawa (Kan.) at 2 p.m. Friday at the Herrington Patriot Center.
TJC Soccer Scores Key Win Over Georgia Perimeter
ATLANTA -- The Tyler Junior College Apache soccer team completed a successful Labor Day Weekend swing to Georgia with a 1-0 victory over No. 2 Georgia Perimeter Monday.
The No. 9 Apaches won the defensive outing with a penalty kick from Adam Girdlestone 12 minutes into the match. TJC's William Darier was fouled to set up the PK attempt.
For the game, TJC had 15 shots on goal to just two for the Jaguars. Tyler also had five cornerkicks to the Jags' three.
It was the third straight win by TJC to open the season as well as the Apaches' third shutout.
"We played well defensively," TJC coach Steve Clements said. "It was the first time we played on back-to-back days, plus we were playing a fresh team."
On Sunday, the Apaches won over No. 8 Louisburg (N.C.), 5-0.
TJC opens its home season with matches Friday and Saturday at Pat Hartley Field.
The Apaches meet Richland on Friday and Cedar Valley on Saturday. Both games have 7 p.m. starts.
