Sept. 1: Not Reason Enough
Boy! This blows my mind that supposedly educated presidents of colleges would recommend a change to a lower legal drinking age to solve the drinking problem at colleges! It is especially ironic, since I believe the answer to the problem lays more in the education of our children and youth.
I base this on my experience with inmates who were in prison due to alcohol- and drug-related events in their lives. While in prison, some learned what alcohol does to your mind and body. Those I asked said that if they were given this information earlier, they probably would not have taken that first drink.
One of the medical facts I came across years ago stated that our nervous system is not developed until at least age 21. Therefore there is damage to the system as a result of underage drinking. This information alone would be reason to not lower the drinking age.
