UPDATE: Be Wary of Tyler, Longview Streets Likely to Flood
From Staff Reports

The city of Tyler released a short list of streets that tend to flood in heavy rainfall.

City officials are urging motorists to be careful when driving through these areas, as storms produced by Hurricane Gustav through East Texas over next few days could dump heavy rain.

The streets are as follows:

  • East Erwin Street, from High Street to Fleishel Street

  • High Street Bridge, near East Erwin

  • Fleishel Street Bridge, near East Erwin

  • Douglas Street, from Houston Street to Front Street

  • Bonner Street underpass

  • Greg Morgan, director of Utilities and Public Works, said Tyler doesn’t have a large number of streets that flood, and the ones that do are usually in low-lying areas where creeks may exceed their banks and flood streets if storms are intense enough.

Morgan said the Bonner Street underpass tends to flood briefly due to an undersized drainage system within the railroad right-of-way.

“Border Street makes a convenient one-block detour around the underpass,” he said.

Morgan said city Street Department crews will use barricades where necessary during the anticipated storms.

And, with Tropical Storm Gustav poised to enter the city, Longview officials today issued a list of roadways that are known to flood:
