Texas College Steers Fall To Mississippi Valley State
ITTA BENA, Miss.—Ronald Brewer rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns to lead NCAA Mississippi Valley State to a 38-0 win over NAIA Texas College in the season opener Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium.

The Delta Devils delivered an early blow to the Steers with 17 second-quarter points, with Brewer scoring on runs of 2 and 30.
MVSU led 24-0 at the half after Ryan Burciaga found Cameron Russ for a 70-yard TD pass.

Burciaga passed for one more TD in the third, a 36-yarder to Chris Watkins, and Brewer scored on a 4-yard run to complete the rout.
The shutout was the first for MVSU since the 2006 opener, a 10-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The SWAC school outgained TC in total yardage 482-192, and limited the Steers to 47 yards rushing.
“Our guys played hard, (had a) good effort,” said Texas College head coach Jay Brown, who was the defensive coordinator at Mississippi Valley State from 1999-2001. “They just had a little more manpower than us tonight.”

TC (0-1) used three different quarterbacks who combined to complete 13 of 30 passes and throw three interceptions. Voshaun Carter connected on the most passes, going 10 of 24 for 106 yards, and led the team in rushing with 30 yards.

Justin Williams caught four passes for 42 yards to lead the TC receivers.

Defensively, Martelius Epps had eight tackles to pace the Steers.

Since bringing back football in 2003, TC is now 1-2 against schools from the SWAC and Football Championship Subdivision.
Two more SWAC schools are on TC's schedule, including a road game with Prairie View on Saturday. TC defeated Prairie View 21-10 in 2003 on the Panthers' homecoming.

TC travels to play Howard Payne (Sept. 6) before making its home debut on Sept. 20 in a showdown with Texas Southern.
Prairie View beat Texas Southern 34-14 on Saturday night.

“We’ll strap it up” Brown said, “and get ready to go next week.”
