Richardson High School overcame a strong match from Tyler Lee's Sarah Sivertson to defeat the Lady Raiders in three sets (25-23, 20-25, 25-22) in the final of the Tyler Invitational at Lee Varsity Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Lady Eagles trailed by as many as six points in the third set but, were able to mount ferocious comeback to win the tournament.
"Coming back and winning that shows tremendous courage," said first-year Richardson coach Adam Cornell. "I'm so proud of them for hanging in there for these two long days.
"You can tell how happy they are," Cornell said of his team's celebration following the match.
Sivertson finished the night with 12 kills, 14 assists, three blocks and six aces and earned the kudos of both coaches.
"Well she's amazing, she's amazing," Cornell said. "If they had another one of her, we would've been in big trouble. We couldn't stop her the way it was."
Lee coach Melissa Lee, who notched her 400th career victory earlier in the day against Leon High School, said it was the best game she had seen Sivertson play all season.
Sydney Lindsay of Lee recorded six kills and eight digs. Beth Felix added 19 assists for the Lady Raiders.
Richardson's Shelby Dobson had a game-high 17 kills. Teammate Julia Pass had 34 assists to lead all players.
Coach Lee attributed the loss to Richardson making fewer mistakes.
"They didn't make as many errors," Lee said. "We didn't block as many balls as we should have on the outside."
Tyler Lee next takes the court Tuesday at Hallsville.
