August 31: Are We Employing Modern Maginot Line?
At the beginning of WWII there was a division between the "Old Guard" and the new military about how to conduct a war. France fell into the romantic, but sadly mistaken, "Old Guard." In the early days of the war gallant French soldiers on horses, carrying lances, were mowed down by machine guns as they charged German forces. Expecting entrenched warfare, they built the Maginot Line. Hitler merely flew and drove around it.
John McCain has argued that Barack Obama is inexperienced concerning national defense. It occurred to me that a man (McCain) who confessed he was "illiterate" about computers should understand that the real threat to us in America is some terrorist jamming our computers and killing Americans by killing our ability to deliver our planes safely to their destinations.
(I recently flew to North Carolina and listened to the radio reports about computer problems shutting down flight plans and momentarily paralyzing our air travel in the eastern United States.)
Maybe it is time to consider that dropping bombs and shooting people in the street is the modern Maginot Line of the 21st century.
