Jacksonville High Students Get New Building, Program

JACKSONVILLE -- Jacksonville High School has begun the school year in a remodeled building and with a new program for freshmen.
Jacksonville Independent School District Public Relations Coordinator Marc McCloud said the building which primarily houses ninth grade was repainted and had windows put in.
"The students referred to it as the dungeon," he said, noting that the building used to have no windows.
McCloud said the building also received technology upgrades and now has ceiling-mounted projectors.
"It's a dramatic improvement," he said. "(The remodeling) was a pretty exciting thing."
Freshmen are part of the new Ninth Grade Initiative created to help with the transition from middle school to high school.
McCloud said students learn what a credit is and that if they fail a class, they have to make up the credit(s).
Assistant Principal Tim Eden said freshmen are split into either a blue group or gold group for core classes.
A group of teachers has the same students and are better able to discuss issues involving an individual student, he said.
If a student is having a behavioral problem in one class, Eden explained that the team could meet and identify patterns in behavior and help the student.
Eden said that under the Ninth Grade Initiative is the initiative Zeros Aren't Permitted (ZAP). A student who didn't turn in an assignment would receive a ZAP card and be required to complete the assignment.
Another benefit is that a parent could meet with all of their child's teachers in one group meeting instead of individually.
The Ninth Grade Initiative's incentive program includes Student of the Month luncheons, he added.
Another part of the Initiative was a fair held in spring for the incoming freshmen. McCloud said representatives from departments at the high school came to the middle school and answered questions from parents and students.
There were also extracurricular departments. They talked about activities that the students could participate in when they got to high school, he said.
