East Texas Football: Alto's 28-Game Win Streak Snapped By San Augustine
SAN AUGUSTINE -- Alto's 28-game win streak came to an abrupt halt against a tough San Augustine squad, 26-7, Friday night.
Turnovers -- one returned for a 42-yard touchdown by junior defensive back Harlon Kelley -- and a huge grind-it-out running game proved to be the difference.
Four Alto turnovers -- two interceptions and two fumbles -- proved to be costly in the loss.
Senior Cedric Jones rushed for 116 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Wolves.
San Augustine finished with a total 231 rushing yards.
Alto had trouble moving the ball against the Wolves' defense.
The Yellowjackets finished with a total of just 170 offensive yards -- 83 on the ground and 87 through the air.
The loss, Alto's first since the 2005 Class 2A playoffs, ended with an offensive onslaught late by an overpowering San Augustine squad that is now one win away from matching last year's win total in a 2-8 campaign.
The Wolves scored 12 fourth-quarter points to put the game away.
Senior quarterback Darius Porter, who finished with 73 passing yards, sealed the streak-buster with a 29-yard touchdown completion to Marchristopher Barnes late in the fourth quarter.
Alto's Javante Jones completed seven passes for 87 yards.
Both teams seemed to be going in to halftime tied at 7-7 after Jones completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Lavadrick Singletary in the second quarter.
But it was San Augustine, not Alto, who made the big plays when it counted.
The Kelley interception just before the half turned out to be the game changer in the end.
San Augustine will host state-ranked Arp at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, while Alto will host Garrison.

Palestine 58, Rusk 35
RUSK -- Palestine Wildcats showed a potent offense in downing the Rusk Eagles in the season opener for both schools.
Rusk was led by Marcell Johnson, who finished the game with 132 yards and two TDs on 23 carries.
Pittsburg 7, Jefferson 6
PITTSBURG -- The Jefferson Bulldogs dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker at Pittsburg in the season opener for both clubs.
Pittsburg tailback Ted Burns ran for 111 yards on 19 carries, but had the game-winner when he took a short Mitch Manley pass and raced 50 yards through the Jefferson defense for the Pirates' lone touchdown.
Saul Fraga's PAT proved to be the difference giving Pittsburg a 7-0 lead with 7:08 remaining in the first half.
Pittsburg's defense repeatedly thwarted Jefferson, giving the Pirates' offense good field position most of the first half.
Pittsburg appeared headed for a second touchdown but with 1:17 remaining in the half, Jefferson's Destin Mosley picked off Manley's pass at the goal line and ran 100 yards for a Bulldog touchdown. The PAT failed, however, and that one-point margin would prove fatal.
Both teams combined for 15 penalties for 120 yards and also fumbled a combined eight times -- Pittsburg losing 2-of-3 and Jefferson losing 3-of-5.
Pittsburg withstood a handful of Jefferson rallies in the second half but managed to keep the football for the better part of the final two periods and ended up outgaining Jefferson, 337-123, in total yardage.
Manley completed 14-of-28 for 213 yards to post a fine varsity debut.
Jefferson was led on the ground by Mosley, who, on top of the lengthy interception return, ran for 54 yards on 14 carries. Cordell Roberson hauled in four passes for 30 yards to lead the Bulldogs receiving corps.
