UT Tyler's Buchanan Receives Soccer Preseason Award
UT Tyler senior Kelly Buchanan was voted the women's soccer Preseason Defensive Player of the Year for the American Southwest Conference by the league's head coaches and sports information directors Wednesday.
Buchanan, a Houston native, was named first team all-ASC as a defender last year as she led a defense that allowed 17 goals and held 11 opponents scoreless in 20 games.
The Patriots were also picked to finish second in the conference behind perennial power Hardin-Simmons. Tyler received five first-place votes and 359 points, 23 points behind HSU and its 21 first-place votes.
The Cowgirls have won 95 straight conference games and have won the past five ASC championships.
Texas Lutheran's Kelli Layden was tabbed as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Layden was named ASC Offensive Player of the Year in 2007 with a league-high 47 points and 22 goals.
Texas-Dallas came in third in the preseason poll and Texas Lutheran, Mississippi College and Mary Hardin Baylor were also picked to qualify for the ASC Championship Tournament as one of the top six squads.
Rounding out the top ten, Ozarks was voted seventh, followed by Howard Payne, LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist.
Louisiana College, Schreiner, McMurry and Concordia were picked to finish at the bottom of the conference.
The Patriots travel to Shreveport, La., this weekend to kick off the season against Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Oklahoma City on Monday at 11 a.m.
Edgewood Volleyball
WILLS POINT -- The Edgewood Lady Dogs finished second in their pool at the Wills Point Coca-Cola Attack'em Volleyball Tournament Thursday.
Edgwood defeated Winona (25-12, 25-17) and Ferris (25-21, 25-12), while falling to Wills Points (20-25, 25-15, 25-20).
Standouts for Edgewood were Ashley Kay, Emily Eggleston, Dominique Lyons, Trisha McDaniel, Brittney Eason, Desiree Hernandez, Cassidi Henderson, Bree Bellows and Chelsey King.
Arp Volleyball
Arp will play in the Silver Bracket Saturday in the Tyler Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
The Lady Tigers will play at noon in the Robert E. Lee High School K Gym.
On Thursday, Arp won over Athens (25-19, 25-19), while falling to Whitehouse (25-23, 25-16) and Garland Naaman Forest (24-26, 25-15, 25-15).
Standouts were Kandace Sipes, Kelsey Allen, Latrice Greenhouse, Mallory Roberts, Alex Holland, Ravon Wofford, Joan Romo and Kari Kuykendall.
