Firefighters Battle Blaze, Exploding Ammunition
A fire broke out shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday at a home at 400 Whiteoak Lane in Tyler, where firefighters not only battled flames, but ammunition exploding because of heat.
Tony Gumber, a Tyler fire investigator, said it appears the fire originated in the garage area of the home.
Bobbie Petry, who lives in the home, called 911 and reported a crackling sound in the garage before she went to a neighbor's house, Gumber said.
He said at the scene that the cause was not yet known nor was the amount of damage to the home, although he said it appeared to have suffered substantial fire and water damage.
Bobbie Petry is comforted by her neighbor Frances Edmonson as she watches firefighters put the fire out at her home.
The fire investigator said no one was injured in the blaze, despite the ammunition exploding.
"There's always a danger when ammunition is going off in a fire, but it's not the same as firing the ammunition from a weapon," he said.
