A few isolated showers and thunderstorms formed over East Texas at mid-afternoon Wednesday, while most of the region was warm and dry. A weak upper air high pressure ridge continued in control of the area's weather. Daytime heating of this air mass generated the shower activity.

On Friday, a weak cold front will become stationary in or near the region. This should give another chance for showers daily through Sunday.

Tropical Storm Gustav was off the southeastern tip of Cuba Wednesday afternoon. It is forecast to return to hurricane status and enter the Gulf of Mexico Saturday. The storm track would bring him ashore as a Category 3 hurricane Monday or Tuesday, and most likely along the Louisiana Coast. If this forecast verifies, East Texas may be in for significant rainfall in the middle of next week.

Wednesday's temperatures were slightly above normal.

Low readings were from the high 60s in the north to the high 70s in the south slightly warmer than on Tuesday. 70-degree readings are likely through Saturday morning.

Afternoon high temperatures were from near 90 to the middle 90s again a degree or so higher than on Tuesday. High readings Thursday and Saturday should be in the middle 90s, and may nose into the high 90s on Friday afternoon.
