Around sundown Thursday, the fifth installment of the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic will open up with the first of three marquee matchups.
All six teams entered in the classic owns at least a state championship appearance this decade. Four of the six have won titles since the 2000 season.
Class 3A heavyweights Jasper and Gilmer get the event going in a rematch of their previous classic meeting from three years earlier on Thursday.
On Friday, two 5A champions from this decade clash when Lufkin and Robert E. Lee meet.
The event wraps up Saturday with the classic's most consistent matchup to date -- Texas High vs. John Tyler.
All three games are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
Tickets for individual games cost $8 for adults and $6 for children. ΓΆΒ?Β?Tickets are $10 at the gate.
Jasper-Gilmer
The Gilmer-Jasper affair is a rematch from the 2004 Class 3A Division II state championship. Gilmer won a thriller, 49-47, for the school's first ever title.
It also marks a homecoming of sorts for Jasper head coach Thomas Brooks, who led John Tyler to postseason berths in 2005 and 2006 before leaving the job after only two seasons.
Gilmer returns six starters from a 14-1 team that reached the state championship game. Jasper brings back 13 starters from a 7-5 squad.
Lufkin-Robert E. Lee
Lee and Lufkin will be locking horns for the first time since 2004. That year, Lufkin defeated Lee 44-33, though the Red Raiders rebounded and went on to capture the school's first ever state title.
The teams have split the past 14 matchups, although the Red Raiders hold a 4-3 edge in the new millennium.
Both defenses figure to be solid. Each returns three offensive and seven defensive regulars from teams that lost in bi-district. Lufkin finished 9-2 last season and Lee 5-6.
Texas High-John Tyler
For the fourth time since the classic's inception, JT and Texas High will play -- the most matchups of any other teams.
Texas High has won two of the three classic meetings, not counting last year's 38-7 win over JT in the season opener in Texarkana.
JT, which brings back 13 starters from a 1-9 team, leads the all-time series with Texas High 18-17-1.
Texas High welcomes back 14 starters, seven on each side of the ball, from a team that went 6-4-1.
