Robert E. Lee Downs San Marcos
WACO -- Robert E. Lee's first-team offense scored once in the opening sessions and put 10 more points on the board in the running half to dominate San Marcos 17-0 Friday in a scrimmage at Waco ISD Stadium.
REL sophomore quarterback Luke Wagner tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Nick Hardin and tailback Aaron Myers broke loose for a 60-yard scoring run. Senior kicker Judson Hinsley made both extra points and booted through a 20-yard field goal to account for the first-team's offense in the game.
Lee head coach Mike Owens said REL's second team also scored two touchdowns. The Red Raiders open the season Friday at home against Lufkin.
"We threw and caught the ball really good. If we don't have so many penalties, this would've been a lot better," Owens said. "We told the officials to call it tight, just like a regular game. I am glad they called it like that, because it gives us a chance to emphasize some things."
On defense, Lee performed as advertised. The Red Raiders blanked San Marcos throughout while the first-team unit gave up only one first down. C.J. Johnson intercepted a pass and Lee also forced a fumble.
"I think our defense got better as the game went on," Owens said. "(San Marcos) didn't score at all and I don't know if they made too many first downs (overall)."
The Red Raiders turn their attention to Friday as REL hosts the Panthers Friday at 7:30 p.m. in game 2 of the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic at TMF Rose Stadium.
