Backpacks aplenty lined tables at the nonprofit Christian radio studios of KVNE/KGLY on Wednesday. The goal to raise 400 school backpacks to distribute to orphans in East Texas and St. Petersburg, Russia, was surpassed, said Leah Coombs, director of community outreach for KVNE/KGLY.
"There are 408 backpacks lying all over our conference room," Mrs. Coombs said Wednesday. "They're all kinds of colors and styles ranging from a $5 backpack to one that's all leather."
But it's the thought that's going to count to the orphans, she said, not the cost.
"To the kids, these backpacks will be priceless because they know someone loves them enough to give them a school backpack."
On-air host Jennifer Winborn of KVNE 89.5, FM will travel to St. Petersburg in September with Orphan Outreach of Dallas to distribute 300 of the schoolbook tote bags. The recent military trouble between Russia and neighboring Georgia has not yet delayed the planned distribution of the backpacks to orphans in Russia, she said.
"The orphans aren't part of this (the military aggression)," she said. "They're not the aggressors. They're the innocent bystanders. God tells us in his word to after the orphan, and we need to honor that."
Orphan Outreach that organzied "Mission Backpack," is keeping "an eye on events in Russia," Mrs. Winborn said. She is scheduled to land in St. Petersburg with 14-year-old son, Kiefer.
"We're not going to be near the military action," she said, "but we ask for prayers for our safety. More, we ask that we will be light for the kids."
Reports from Jennifer Winborn live from St. Petersburg, via telephone, are planned to be broadcast on KVNE/KGLY.
