Sen. John McCain had his finest hour so far in his interview with Rick Warren.

He reached across the isle to the base of the GOP - the conservative voters. His quick, decisive answers showed strength of character and leadership qualities not present in Sen. Barack Obama who is an expert at waffling.

It was very reassuring to hear McCain say he would call upon experts in the fields of advice while Obama will ask his wife and grandmother for advice first, followed by Sam Nunn, Dick Lugar, Teddy Kennedy and Tom Coburn. That shallow answer should make most of his supporters happy.

As I read reviews I wondered if writers from the Washington Post and New York Times were watching the same channel I was watching. Perhaps they missed a few of the candidates' responses. Did anyone notice Obama never answered the question, "At what point does a baby get human rights?"

I think the staff of McCain's campaign should prepare a chart showing each candidate's answer on each question, side by side. Responsible undecided American voters should see decisive, direct answers are more desirable in a leader than wishy-washy evasive answers. If voters are not able to see the difference, our nation is in trouble.

McCain has to win the presidency before he becomes commander in chief. He needs the pro-life conservatives as well as citizens concerned about terrorism. Perhaps it is time for McCain to swallow his pride and select Mike Huckabee for vice president. Huckabee has learned a great deal in his quest for the highest office in the land.

As the overwhelming underdog, people had to admire his determination and perseverance. I believe he could deliver the conservative vote and much of the Southern vote.

Collectively the people are wiser than all of the politicians in Washington, D.C., but this knowledge is useless if their representatives won't listen.
