Public Mum on Smith County Tax Rate Plan
Smith County commissioners on Monday held a public hearing on their proposed tax rate. No members of the public asked to speak.

The proposed tax rate is the same as last year, 28.8940 cents per $100 in property valuation.

Because the average home value in Smith County rose this year -- from $126,719 to $131,899, or about 4 percent -- many homeowners will see a higher tax bill. On that average home, for example, the bill would be up $14.97 from $366.14 to $388.11.

The budget is scheduled to be adopted on Aug. 25.

Other items approved on Monday include:

  • Payment of bills and payroll, transfers of funds, health claims and budget transfers and amendments.

  • Utility and pipeline installation requests.

  • Easements and plats.

  • Filling the vacant position of county extension agent for 4-H and Youth.

  • Resolution honoring First Apostolic Church in Tyler Pastor Kevin Prince.
