August 10: WELCOME ADDITION
REPLY In response to Doug Thornton's Aug. 5 comments regarding the "Pedestrian Ramps" and sidewalks that have been installed along Loop 323, specifically in front of Robert E. Lee High School.
First, let me say that these additions did not originate at the school, nor did we pay for them. However, I think they are a welcome improvement and provide an extra measure of safety for those walking or biking along this very busy section of the loop.
Second, the number of students walking to Robert E. Lee (though not with their moms -- most of our students are a tad old for that) has risen in the past few months, along with the number of students riding bikes and scooters. The bike racks on campus that have sat virtually empty the last few years were being used frequently at the close of school. I would guess that when schools begin again in a few weeks, the racks will again see more usage by students (and staff) who cannot afford the high cost of fuel.
Lastly, Mr. Thornton should have checked his facts before he chose to comment on parking at Robert E. Lee. All students who choose to drive to school must purchase a parking permit at the beginning of each school year in order to park on campus. Students who cannot show a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance on the vehicle they are driving are not allowed to purchase a permit, thus, not allowed to park on campus.
