Veterans Back For Brownsboro Bears
By CHRIS PARRY
Staff Writer

It's been early to rise, early to work for the Brownsboro Bears.

Two-a-day practice sessions began Monday at 7:30 a.m. with 135 players working toward improving on last year's 5-5 record.

The second practice started at 10:45 a.m. and was over just before 1 p.m. The two-a-day practice sessions will continue through next week before the team moves to afternoon practices.

"We had a good group returning with about 20 lettermen back," said John Settle, who is 29-26 as head coach of the Bears and led Brownsboro to the regional finals in 2006.

"That helps from a retention standpoint. Especially, offensively, we have a lot back. They remembered a lot, so we didn't have to teach everything."

Settle added the early practices are being used to combat the triple-digit temperatures that have been blanketing East Texas.

"It feels awfully humid (even in the morning) ... it's hot," Settle said. "The kids and coaches have done well so far. The last hour today they got a little dead-legged, which is normal."

A big concern at this time of year is dehydration as players are pushing themselves trying to impress coaches for a spot and/or get back in shape for the regular season.

Settle said because of this, water is a big priority at Brownsboro practices.

"We have a great training staff. We have water at every drill and we water our kids constantly and that is a big deal," Settle said. "Instead of just taking a couple water breaks, we water our kids at every drill."

The Bears will be led by senior receiver/cornerback Tristian Warren. Last year Warren earned first-team all-district honors at both positions, while being named All-East Texas honorable mention at defensive back.

Also back on offense is senior receiver Seth Martin.

They will provide perfect targets for junior quarterback Zack Bailey, who threw for 2,034 yards and 15 touchdowns.

"We have our quarterback and receivers back that know our scheme, so we are definitely offensively ahead of where we are defensively," Settle said.
