Heat Advisory Issued For East Texas
Today will be another scorcher across East Texas and residents should take precautions.
The temperature in Tyler will be at least 100 degrees and possibly hit 104, the National Weather Service said in issuing a heat advisory.
“High pressure will continue to build into the region ushering some of the hottest days this summer,” the NWS said. The combination of heat and humidity is creating a “dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely.”
The heat index — the temperature it “feels” like outside, will be from 105 to 110 degrees.
On Saturday, NWS placed Van Zandt, Rains and other counties to their north and west under an excessive heat warning — its strongest warning against heat-triggered dangers.
“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the agency advised.
The Heat Emergency Plan created by the Tyler-based Northeast Texas Public Health District, advises residents who do not live in air-conditioned buildings to seek relief in public buildings such as shopping centers, libraries and senior centers and prolonged shelter from assistance agencies.
The Salvation Army can also provide air-conditioned shelter for up to 150 people in its Community Center and offers two lounges within the main lodge at 633 N. Broadway Ave., lodge manager John Voight said last month.
The Salvation Army and PATH provide electric box fans to those with no air conditioning.
The heat and lack of rain is contributing to other problems. Whitehouse and Bullard are under outdoor water restrictions. Other cities are considering curtailing outdoor watering.
The Texas Forest Service placed East Texas under a moderate fire danger.
