Museum Hosts Young Artists
The A.C. McMillan African American Museum in Emory recently hosted 35 youth from the Emory Community in its Young Artists Day Program under the direction of Ms. Barbara Roth, a creative artist.
The participants in the workshop designed masks and participated in a discussion of the role of masks in historical and popular culture.
Anthony Porter, an organizer of the event, thought that because of the success of this event, similar programs should be repeated quarterly as a vehicle for involving young people in creative cultural events.
Other museum staff members present were Mrs. Modis McMillan and Mrs. Claressa McMillan.
The students that participated were enthusiastic and look forward to their masks being displayed at the annual Rains County Fair as a part of the A. C. McMillan African American Museum’s exhibit. Workshop attendees came from as far as Dallas, Greenville, and Mount Pleasant.
Adult visitors to the museum during the Youth Artists Day Program viewed documentaries on “Slave Narratives” and the Jim Crow Museum, which is housed at Ferris State University in Michigan.
Some of the parents took tours of the current exhibits at the museum and others were attentive to the instruction and designing of the masks.
