Piano Students Perform For Hundreds In Houston
Forty-five area piano students represented the East Texas Music Teacher’s Association at the Texas Music Teacher’s Association Convention at the Houston Hyatt Regency Hotel in June.

The students played simultaneously on 15 grand pianos on stage in the ballroom of the hotel before an audience of approximately 200 people.

Twelve students in grades seven through 12, played Irving Berlin’s “I Love A Piano.” Seventeen students in grades one through five performed “Changing Places,” by Edna Mae Burnham. A third ensemble of students from grades four through nine included 16 playing “Russian Waltz,” by Catherine Rollin. The students dressed in costumes to depict the style of their music.

Students who participated in the high school ensemble are Jaime Apoderado, Virginia Nix, Russell McCook, Kevin Ridad, Brandi Koop, Eva Watson, Brett Blevins, Nolan Willmon, Beth Felix, Ellen Burton, Elliott Levin and Bryce Jackson. Judy Wilkins directed.


The intermediate ensemble played “Russian Waltz,” by Catherine Rollin. Students in the intermediate ensemble are: Abby Boudreau, Katie Cloud, Bethany Cox, Andrew Cox, Brian Eng, Zoe Epps, Jarod Pamatmat, Jayme Willis, Natalie Koop, Alison Casper, Emilie Casper, Keri Davis, Ryken DeGroat, Adam Erwin, Peter Goodwin and Aza Pace. The ensemble was directed by Gail Hill.

The elementary ensemble included: Samuel Baker, Julia Batis, Emma Berry, Johannah Carmona, Austin Davis, Ian Finlay, Kushan Gupta, Sarah Koop, Kara Kucskowski, Katy Kucskowski, Jordan Pamatmat, Megan Pirtle, Alyse Randolph, Lacie Randolph, Alex Wang, Spencer Dempsey and Keanu Pauraryan. These students were directed by Shelly Davis.

The students are affiliate members of the TMTA and represent the studios of ETMTA piano teachers: Shelly Davis, Donna Calaway, Jo Quinata, Meg Miller, Gail Hill, Brian Braquet, Stephanie Johnson, Glenda Moore and Judy Wilkins.

The student ensembles were three of 115 groups who performed, representing cities from across the state. Every student who played must have qualified to participate by passing a written music theory exam administered biannually by the TMTA.
