Loving Misses Cut In Texas State Open
By HAROLD WILSON Staff Writer Defending champion Matt Loving highlighted the group of more than 90 golfers who missed the cut at 3-over 143 in the Texas State Open.

Loving finished at 6-over 146.

Tyler’s Bryan Baker came within one stroke of moving on, bowing out with a 4-over 144.

Only one Tylerite, Cody Massa, remains in contention. Massa shot a 69 on Friday to improve 2-over 142 and into a tie for 43rd.

Tyler golfers missing the cut included B.J. Waters (8 over), amateurs Reggie Howell (10 over) and Ryan Sirman (11 over) and Chase Wood (16 over).


Scoring Trends
On the whole, golfers made amends on the second day, as scoring dropped more than a full point.

The average score on Friday was 72.21, down from 73.31 on Thursday.

Friday’s field combined for 12 eagles, 465 birdies and 1,576 pars, all up from first day numbers of 11 eagles, 421 birdies and 1,570 pars. The number of bogeys (including doubles) dropped as well, from a combined 784 Thursday to 705 Friday.


Tournament Witnesses Another Ace
Martin Piller recorded the second hole-in-one of the tournament.

Piller’s came on the 164-yard fifth hole.

He used an 8-iron.

On Friday, Perry Arthur aced the 177-yard second hole using a 6-iron.

Brothers Join To Survive Cut
Bobby and Cody Massa have given their family a couple reasons to stay for the weekend.

Both made the cut after failing a combined three times in the past.

Bobby, an amateur in his third State Open, is tied for second at 6-under.

Cody, the assistant pro at The Cascades, is tied for 43rd at 2-over.

“It’s exciting for us,” Bobby said.
