WHITEHOUSE — An early morning fire destroyed a home, but the lone occupant was able to escape through a window. He apparently had no serious injuries.

Smith County Fire Marshal Jim Seaton said the fire was called in about 3:40 a.m. this morning after a juvenile next door to the burning structure woke up to his dog barking.

Seaton said one man was in the home at 10917 Shadow Wood Circle in Whitehouse and was awakened by smoke and got out through a window after opening his bedroom door and seeing flames.

“He’s pretty lucky to have escaped,” he said.

Seaton said firefighters finally got the fire under control, but the home was a total loss.

He added that the man was living in the house while renovations were under way and that the rest of the family had already moved to another home in the Tyler area.

Seaton said the cause remains under investigation, but an early suspect may be wiring to an outside ceiling fan.

TylerPaper.com will post additional details as they become available.
