Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. employees in Tyler voted this afternoon to ratify a company proposal to close the plant early — before the master union contract expires next year.

The union voted at the union hall across from the plant on West Texas Highway 31.
Amy Brei, Goodyear manager of manufacturing communications, previously said the company made a proposal to close the plant early because of lack of demand for rubber.

Harold Sweat, United Steelworkers Local 746L president, said the vote was taken after completion of all three shifts, and that he will now contact the union staff representative and make him aware of the vote outcome.

The date for plant closure has not been set.

The closing would impact approximately 60 positions involved in rubber-mixing operations.
