An exchange of words led to a volley of gunfire and one man being injured by the bullets.
Smith County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a late Tuesday night shooting where one man was shot in the hip and transported to East Texas Medical Center where he was treated.
Lt. Larry Wiginton said the shooting occurred near the Gregg County line on County Road 3111 shortly before 11 p.m.
“The victim was in bed with his wife when she got up to get a drink of water. While she was up she heard a noise and looked outside where she saw two vehicles in the yard,” he said.
Wiginton said the victim got up to see who was in his yard and opened the front door.
“Evidently he knew the suspect and told them to leave because he and his wife were trying to sleep,” he said.
Wiginton said the other man then pulled what appeared to be a handgun and began firing at the house.
“He fired about five or six times toward the front of the house and hit the victim once,” he said.
Wiginton said the victim only knew a street name for the suspect and not his real name, but added detectives are looking for the shooter, who will face a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
