Lindale Band Program Receives Distinction Award
The Lindale Band recently was recognized by the Texas Bandmasters Association as the TBA High School Band Program of Distinction.
The Lindale Band began in 1949 with 33 students and has grown over the years to a program with more than 700 students in grades 6-12. Band begins in the sixth grade at E. J. Moss Intermediate School where there are 204 students enrolled in beginner band. At Lindale Junior High, there are 120 eighth- and 175 seventh-grade band members composing their respective bands. The LJH Bands are directed by Ben Davis, Brent Cannon, Sharon Bird, and Mark Perry. The Lindale JH Symphonic Band has been a Region 21 Honor Band as well as an Area Honor Band participant on several occasions and has also won CC OPS three times.
The Lindale High School Band, known as the Pride of Lindale, has a current enrollment of 236 students in grades 9-12.
The band is under the direction Steven Moore, Susan Scott and Casey Johnson. The band program is comprised of the marching band and three concert bands. The marching band has earned 33 consecutive first divisions at UIL Region Marching Contest and advanced to the UIL State Marching Contest in 2002 and 2004 in class 3A. It finished third in 4A Area Marching Contest in 2007.
The Wind Ensemble, Symphonic and Concert bands have all consistently won UIL Sweepstakes awards at Concert and Sightreading Contest, and the band has received Sweepstakes awards 31 of the past 33 years. In addition, the Lindale Band has had the honor of playing for President George Herbert Walker Bush and marched in the first Gubernatorial parade of George W. Bush.
The Lindale Wind Ensemble was an Honor Band finalist in 1986, 1988, 1990 and 2000, placing second in 1986 and third in 1990, and they were State Honor Band participants in 2004. They were named the 3A State Honor Band in 2006. Additionally, the Wind Ensemble has been a finalist in OPS every year, winning in 2005 and 2006.
Steven Moore has been in Lindale for 18 years. He was first hired in 1990 by Butch Almany, Director of Bands for Lindale ISD from 1975-96, as the Junior High and High School Assistant. In 1993, he was promoted to the Head Junior High position and then assumed the Director of Band duties in 1996. Steven resides in Lindale with his wife of 18 years, Monica, and daughters, Jami and Kaci.
An award like this is the accomplishment of many people, Moore said. It takes a great staff, great band students, parents and administration. The Lindale Band has performed at a high level for a long time and I would be amiss not to mention Mr. Buthch Almany. He was the Director of Bands at Lindale from 1975 to 1996. The work he did put the Lindale Band on the map. Without the work he did, the Lindale Band would not be where it is today.
