Members of Keep Tyler Beautiful and the Tyler Solid Waste Department will be honored at the City Council meeting today for receiving first place in the Governor’s Community Achievement Awards.

The award includes $130,000 in prize money, which will be used for a landscaping project. The Keep Tyler Beautiful board will work with the Texas Department of Transportation, which provides the prize money, to decide on a particular project.

“We are so grateful that a panel of judges who are volunteers just like us, found Tyler deserving to receive this state award,” said Eloise Muxworthy, Keep Tyler Beautiful chairwoman. “This is the first time our city has won, and we want to make sure it’s not the last.”

Keep Tyler Beautiful applied for the award by submitting a six-page report and a 14-page scrapbook describing their activities during the past year. Some of the projects featured in the application were:

  • Tyler earning the designation of Azalea City by the Azalea Association of America;

  • The city hiring an arborist;

    q The Solid Waste Department moving to automated garbage collection;

  • Launching a pro-active code enforcement program;

  • The Tyler Recycling Center partnership with Goodwill to provide electronic recycling to East Texas;

  • The Neighborhood Empowerment Works program’s success in revitalizing two Tyler neighborhoods.

  • Members of the Keep Tyler Beautiful board received their award on June 26 at the 41st Annual Keep Texas Beautiful Conference in Austin. Board members presented a video highlighting their achievements at the conference, and the video will be shown during the 9 a.m. City Council meeting at City Hall, 212 N. Bonner Ave.

    The GCAA program has recognized outstanding communities for 39 years, with TxDOT providing prize money since 1985.

    Kristi Boyett, Keep Tyler Beautiful board liaison, said the city may use the money to build a “Welcome to Tyler” sign, create a native landscaping project or build a large mural along a state highway in Tyler.

    The council will also look at awarding contracts for the 2008 Phase III Perimeter Road Project and for the 2008 Runway Visibility Zone Clearing Project at Tyler Pounds Regional Airport. The projects are funded 95 percent through a grant from the Federal Aviation Administra-tion and 5 percent through the city’s half-cent sales tax.

    Other items on the council’s agenda include:

  • A public hearing to consider input on adopting an ordinance related to the FY 2008-09 Community Develop-ment Block Grant and HOME programs.

  • Letters of agreement with Dixon Services Inc. for services related to the acquisition of rights of way for various Tyler Water Utilities projects, in an amount not to exceed $245,750.

  • Consulting services agreement with the Tyler Chamber of Commerce for Convention and Visitors Bureau services.

  • Authorization for the city manager to participate in the Texas Utility/ONCOR Steering Committee and ratifying payment for the latest annual assessments.

  • Consider appointing Mayor Barbara Bass to the Half-Cent Sales Tax Corporation Board.

  • The following items are included on the consent agenda and will be considered together, in one vote:

  • One-year extension to the Annual Fuel Price Agreement to Beckat Oil and Fuel.

  • Purchase one Damon Daybreak Motor coach from Southern RV Supercenter in the amount of $76,670.

  • Award Contract No. TYL-238 to Red River Construction Company in the amount of $996,000 for construction of aluminum clear well covers located at the Golden Road Water Treatment Plant.

  • The council will convene into executive session immediately following the regular meeting. Members plan to deliberate issues related to economic development and real estate.
