Home For 'Special' Cat Sought By Humane Society
Buddy
The Humane Society of East Texas is hoping to find a home for a cat with special needs.
The cat was found last month at Tyler State Park crouching underneath a hedge outside an office.
“I was shocked at what I saw,” recalled Maxine Harris, the park’s office manager. “I had never seen an animal in such bad shape. His head looked like it had been chewed up and spit out, no hair was visible, just scabs, bloody places and raw looking skin. This went from his head to past his front shoulders.”
She named the cat Buddy.
Marvin Hart, a park ranger, helped clean and administer aid to Buddy. The cat seemed to be barely clinging to life, she said.

Ms. Harris took Buddy to Dr. Jason Beard, a veterinarian at Hideaway Lake, who began treatment. The cat was suffering from mange feline leukemia. Buddy slowly regained his health.
Ms. Harris has turned to the Humane Society of East Texas to find a home for Buddy.
Gayle Helms, the director of the Humane Society of East Texas, said that because Buddy has leukemia, its new owner cannot have other cats in the home. Ms. Harris hopes Buddy’s story has a happy ending. “His hair is (now) soft and yellow, his eyes are bright and full of love, but he still has no place to call home, no one to curl up with at night, no one to belong to,” she said “He’s waiting patiently, waiting for someone who will be willing to take all the love and loyalty he has to give.”
Those interested in adopting Buddy can contact Mrs. Helms at the humane society by calling 903-597-2471. The shelter is at 1823 County Road 386 and is open for adoptions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays through Tuesdays.
