July 7: Demise of America
Our country is facing times we have not seen in my lifetime. As gasoline prices climb higher and higher, I foresee disastrous results to America’s economy as a whole and the loss of financial independence for large numbers of American households.
Many Americans who will be affected are hard-working, middle class Americans who pride themselves on being independent and not accepting “charity” from the government. Perhaps as many of 50 percent of Americans will not be able to buy the gas to fill their car to drive to work and pay their bills.
I do not know if there are enough “rich” people to fund future welfare rolls. The countries with oil will be the world leaders. America will be the third-world nation many people have predicted.
This problem has come about because Congress has failed to act appropriately in regard to our nation’s oil reserves. Our leaders should have realized that eventually the oil would run out.
Congress should have been funding “real” efforts to develop alternative fuel sources rather than wasting untold resources while lying to Americans about corn as an answer to the problem.
Now even with our nation facing an economic disaster, Congress is still “playing politics” with our future. The USA is large enough it should never have to depend on any other nation in the world for any product; yet we cannot operate without foreign oil.
We need to use our own oil -- then we would not be beholden to any other nation for anything. We have enough oil sitting under our land and under our Continental Shelf. We need to find it and drill for it whereever it is known to be — off shore, in the Rocky Mountains, or in ANWR. The sight of a pumping oil well might become a beautiful sight to Americans!
The animals don’t care if they share the land with oil wells. Eventually the animals will completely ignore the wells. The floating platforms will make the fish thrive in the oceans surrounding the USA. The oil production will give Americans jobs so they can stay off welfare. The knowledge that oil is being found on USA soil will give people hope, and that alone will stimulate the economy.
It has taken many years for Congress to make a mess of this proportion. Unfortunately, it is going to take a few years to straighten out the mess they made. It would have been much better if we had started just 10 years ago, but we didn’t. In 10 more years this problem will be unbelievable!
If Congress does nothing to make America independent of foreign oil, in 10 years the world will have witnessed the Rise and Fall of the United States of America. (That sounds like a good title for a book someone should write to help some struggling democracy of the future.)
Americans are pleading for Congress to do something. I certainly hope Americans are smart enough to elect different representatives, if these do not listen. Americans have been easily misled in the past, but perhaps it time for Rip Van Winkle to wake up.
