Robert E. Lee closed out strong on two fronts.
Lee bounced back from an early hole to roll past John Tyler 40-25 and lock up the title in a Trinity Mother Frances SportsCARE 7-on-7 league on the last day of play Thursday at Lindsey Park.
After losing their first three games, Lee ended with nine consecutive wins to finish first with a 9-3 record.
JT started strong with five wins in their first six games, but lost five of its final six to finish 6-6.
The Lions led the Red Raiders 12-0 after Jeremy Johnson hooked up with Ky’Ordrick Black and Charlie Jackson for touchdowns.
The Red Raiders turned up the intensity from there, intercepting Johnson on three straight possessions. Meanwhile, Lee’s offense, after being stopped on its first two drives, went into halftime with four straight scores to take a 14-point lead into the break.
Luke Wagner finished with six touchdowns for Lee. Derell Tate led the way with two TD receptions and one conversion, including a 45-yard bomb that gave the Red Raiders the lead for good.
In four meetings between the schools, Lee won three.

Wagner took over from there, finding K.J. Jones for two TDs, and Tate and Joey Turner for one apiece.
With the first half coming to an end, Wagner unloaded down the field to a diving Turner to set up a Jones touchdown that put the Red Raiders in front, 13-7.
The Eagles did have moments of hope defensively, with Will Kyle recording three interceptions and Lawrence one. Lawrence’s pick came after a Wagner pass was deflected and went through one defender’s hands and into his.
But Lee held strong as well, recording multiple turnovers on downs, and a Junior Cain interception to help keep Lindale scoreless for the rest of the game.

The John Tyler defense stiffened down the stretch, and Johnson found Black for the final score late to help the Lions squeak out a win.

Jacksonville failed to score on its final two drives after Kyle Stacy’s TD pass, and subsequent one-point conversion toss, put the Indians in front, 19-14.
Black delivered the goods for JT in the end, catching a short pass from Johnson, then applying a shake-and-bake move to reach paydirt.
The JT stop unit forced five straight incompletions and a four-second violation to cinch the win.
