Habitat Offers Variety Of Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer Corner where volunteering through Directors of Volunteers in Agencies (DOVIA) makes the difference in the community.
Habitat for Humanity of Smith County, a non-profit 501(c) (3,) ecumenical Christian housing ministry, seeks to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through volunteers and community support, Habitat builds simple, affordable homes for deserving partner families. The partner families have shown the need for adequate housing, have the means to repay the 20-year, no-interest mortgage, and are willing to use their own “sweat equity” (300-500 volunteer hours) to build their home and the homes of other families. Many opportunities for volunteering exist, ranging from construction to office help, to preparing meals for construction site volunteers. To discuss volunteering, contact Rand Huzenlaub at 903-595-6630, Ext. 10.
Literacy Council of Tyler is looking for volunteers who are interested in tutoring adults in reading, math and English as a second language. You do not need to be a certified teacher, and you do not need to speak a foreign language to volunteer. It only takes a couple of hours of your time per week, and LCOT will work with your schedule and interests to find the perfect opportunity for you. LCOT provides the training and materials. Call Whitney at 903- 533-0330 to find out more or to register for the summer training schedule.
Legacy Hospice: Do you want to have a positive impact on someone’s life during a period of need? Legacy Hospice is always looking for compassionate, caring individuals to interact with people who are experiencing life-ending illness, or to assist in office activities. Volunteers can visit with patients in nursing facilities or at their homes and provide assistance with simple tasks, shopping, or just talking and sharing time with them. No special skills are needed except a willingness to serve and share with others. Contact Legacy Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Fred Carl for details at 903-509-1187 or visit www.legacyhospice.com.
Cancer Foundation for Life needs enthusiastic, caring volunteers to be an integral part of its program. CFFL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for persons living with cancer and other chronic conditions by providing a physical conditioning (exercise) and psychological support (friendship) program. Volunteer opportunities include motivational support to patients, assistance to clinical staff and office/clerical tasks. If you can spare a few hours a week, or even a month, and would like to lend a hand to help participants attain their goal of improved strength and health, call Emily Voss or Lindsay Grubbs at 903-561-0149. Visit the Web site at http://cancerfoundationfor-life.org.

Facilitators are also needed to work with teens to end disruptive behaviors and change the direction of their lives. Volunteer training is required and an on-site staff person supports volunteers.
