Rohn Boone was sworn in and welcomed Thursday as the newest member of the Tyler Junior College Board of Trustees.
Boone secured the Place 9 seat on the board by winning Saturday’s runoff election against Melinda Coker.
“It’s been a long process with the runoff election, but I’m absolutely thrilled to be here today and to be sworn in and be able to begin working with the Tyler Junior College Board,” Boone said after the meeting.
Results from the runoff election showed Boone, a partner in Boone & Boone Construction, secured 885 votes, or about 64 percent, while Mrs. Coker, the former director of TJC’s Career and Placement department, received 504 votes, or about 36 percent.
In the original May 10 election for the seat, Boone ranked in second place — Mrs. Coker led with 2,628 votes, or 41.2 percent, to Boone’s 2,541 votes, or 39.8 percent. Steven Sherwood won 1,209 votes, or 18.9 percent. A candidate needed to win at least 50 percent of the vote in that election to secure the spot.
A Tyler native and an associate pastor at First Baptist Church Wright City, 53-year-old Boone has served on more than a dozen local boards, most notably his 19-month term as the Chamber of Commerce chairman in 1997-98 when the Chamber of Commerce building was constructed.
Boone has said he and his whole family attended TJC, part of the reason he has a heart for the college.
“When you look at the folks that we come in contact with every day that Tyler Junior College educated, it’s absolutely amazing,” Boone said in a previous interview. “What an impact they have on the community. We just need to make sure that we continue to allow Tyler Junior College to grow.”
