Thunderstorm Activity Expected Later This Week
Except for a few thunderstorms across the extreme northeast Monday morning and again Monday afternoon, the area continued very warm and dry. Additional thunderstorm activity is likely in the region Tuesday through Friday, with temperatures running closer to normal.
A cluster of strong thunderstorms crossed through Southeast Oklahoma and extreme Northeast Texas during the early-morning hours of Monday. It had formed over Northwest Texas and North Central Oklahoma Sunday evening. A severe thunderstorm watch was displayed for a few area counties in the extreme northeastern corner of the state. Red River and Bowie Counties were included within the watch. Severe weather did not occur in the region.
The Texarkana airport picked up a 32-mph wind gust just after 3:30 a.m. from a thunderstorm crossing to the north. The Clarksville 1W station picked up 0.35 inch, and was the only station in the area reporting rain Monday morning. This thunderstorm cluster left behind an outflow boundary of rain-cooled air, which spawned more widely scattered showers and thunderstorms Monday afternoon.
Some of these became intense in Northwest Louisiana, particularly over Bossier Parish. The thunderstorm activity of this week is the result of what is known as a “northwest flow event”.
Winds aloft are northwesterly around the eastern perimeter of upper air high pressure over the Western United States. Disturbances drop down the Plains in this flow, spawn thunderstorm clusters in the late-afternoons.
