UT Tyler Set To Implement Prostate Cancer Campaign
Dr. William Sorensen, assistant professor of health and kinesiology at The University of Texas at Tyler will implement a prostate cancer awareness campaign, the university announced.
Sorensen will conduct research, surveying elderly men and primary-care physicians in Tyler. Graduate student Terrence Ates and undergraduate Sebastian Broussard will assist Sorensen,
“We will focus on the community awareness campaign, using media messages and public health messages to target venues in Tyler,” Sorensen said. “We’re trying to induce elderly men to engage more in conversations about prostate heath to their physicians.”
The work is funded by a $63,025 Texas Department of State Health Services grant.
Sorensen said one in five men will develop prostate cancer and that statistics show an increased cancer problem in East Texas, compared to other regions in Texas.
Sorensen specializes in epidemiology.
