John Tyler Grad Seventh In 100-Meter At The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
WILLIAMS
DES MOINES, Iowa — UT-San Antonio sophomore Teddy Williams settled for seventh-place in a hotly-contested 100-meter dash finals race, but despite not getting a medal, the Tyler native left with a big reward Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

By making it to the finals,

the John Tyler graduate earns All-America honors, which go to the top eight American-born finishers.

Racing in what CBS College Sports Network announcers called “possibly the greatest college field ever-assembled,” Williams crossed the finish line in 10.40 seconds, and was unable to duplicate his first-round performance where he beat national-leader Richard Thompson of LSU.

Thompson took first in the race that counted, completing the straightaway in 10.12. Clemson’s Travis Padgett (10.16) and LSU’s Trindon Holliday (10.18), the silver-medalist in the 100 at last year‘s USA Outdoor championships, rounded out the top three.

Florida State’s Walter Dix, the 2007 champion in the 100 and NCAA record-holder in the 200, came in fourth at 10.22.

Williams, who was wearing his customary shades, ran out of Lane No. 1, and was in a tight jam for second at the halfway point before failing to gain any ground on the homestretch.

“I am so proud of what Teddy accomplished tonight,” UTSA head coach Aaron Fox said after the race. “His hamstring tightened up on him in Wednesday’s semifinals and he was able to come out and compete against one of the top fields in NCAA history despite not being 100 percent.”

Williams, who earlier in the month won the 100 at the Midwest Regional, became just the fifth All-America in UTSA history.

On Thursday, Williams bowed out in the first round of the 200. The busy month sprinter speeds on, as he prepares to try and earn a trip to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

The U.S. Olympic Team Track and Field Trials are scheduled to begin on Friday, June 27, in Eugene, Ore.

After racing in the trials, Williams is set to compete on the U.S. national team in the NACAC (North American, Central American, and Caribbean) Under-23 Championships in Toluca, Mexico from July 18-20.
