University of Texas at Tyler’s Holland Drafted To Oakland Athletics
UT Tyler junior pitcher Brett Holland was among several players with East Texas ties selected on the second day of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft on Friday.
Holland, a Lindale native, was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 48th round.
The right-hander was a perfect 11-0 for the Patriots during the season with a 2.76 ERA. His 113 strikeouts in 91 1-3 innings were good enough to rank in top 10 nationally among Division III players.

The hard thrower, a graduate of Carthage High School, was taken in the 14th round by the Mariners. He is also a member of the East Texas Pump Jacks, the newest Texas Collegiate League franchise.
The junior from Sugar Land, taken by the Reds in the 36th round, appeared in 22 games and posted a 2-4 record and 7.53 ERA in 69 1-3 innings.
The junior spent his freshman season at UT Tyler and was drafted by Colorado in the 27th round. The graduate of Newman Smith High School in Carrollton appeared in 18 games with a 5-2 record and 4.91 ERA for Baylor this season.
The high school senior that quarterbacked the football team to their second straight state title in December was selected in the 22nd round by the Chicago Cubs.
The left-hander, a product of Hudson High School in Lufkin, was taken by the Giants in the 24th round. He made a team-high 15 starts with an 8-4 record and 4.35 ERA for the Cougars this season.
The lefty from Henderson High School was picked by the Houston Astros in the 37th round after appearing in 12 games for the Aggies this season.
The former Kilgore High School standout was selected in the 17th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Lumberjacks pitcher, drafted in the 33rd round by St. Louis, made 18 appearances with a 6-4 record and 6.27 ERA.
The graduate of Kilgore High School was picked by the Washington Nationals in the 30th round. He was 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 11 games for the Longhorns this year.
