With his hands cuffed behind his back, 21-year-old Demontrell Lamar Miller was escorted to an awaiting police car as family members shouted they loved him.
Upon learning Miller had been charged with the capital murder of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son, many of his family members began saying what they were seeing couldn’t be real.
“Oh God. Oh God. Oh God. Oh God,” a woman identified as Miller’s mother continued yelling as she fell on the steps of the Tyler Police Department.
Family and police officers rushed to her aide and tried to calm the woman who seemed to be hyperventilating.
Officer Doyle Lynch said Miller was charged with capital murder in the death of Kelynn J’Davion Pinson.

“Investigators were advised that the child died of complications from blunt force trauma, but that’s all I have right now,” he said at the police department.
Officers responded to the Hidden Springs Apartments, at 2400 Shiloh Road, on a 911 call of an unconscious 2-year-old boy who lived at that location.

The child was transported to Mother Frances Hospital by EMS and pronounced dead by an emergency room attending physician.
Smith County Justice of the Peace Mitch Shamburger ordered the child’s body be sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences, where an autopsy was performed.

Lynch said Miller was watching Pinson and his own 5-month-old son while the mother of the two children was at work.
He added that Child Protective Services responded to the hospital and has taken temporary custody of the 5-month-old pending further investigation.

Linda Brown said Miller was her grandson and she could not understand the charges against him.
“This is crazy. That there is the best kid in Tyler and they don’t make many like him,” she said.

Ms. Brown said Miller had been a great parent.
“He was so good with those kids. I just don’t understand all of this,” she said.
