Tyler Civic Theatre Officials Announce Winners of New Play Festival
Officials with the Tyler Civic Theatre Center have announced the five winning plays selected for the third annual New Play Festival, scheduled for Saturday, June 14 in readers' theater format on the Rogers Theatre Center stage. Performances are scheduled from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Becky Clayton of Tyler, Whitney Ryan Garrity of Lubbock, Emmitte Hall of Tyler, Helen Jameson of Tyler, and the members of a creative writing class at the University of Texas at Tyler took the top honors and will be present at the Festival when their plays are read.
Ms. Clayton, a teacher of dramatic arts at TCT, won with "The Scarlet Fox,'' an energetic and imaginative play written for young audiences.
A published writer of comedies, musicals, and children's plays, Garrity's entry was "The Bride of Uforia'', a campy, science fiction comedy.
A winner in TCT's first New Play Festival, Hall submitted "The Fear,'' an eerie tale of small town life and monsters. An experienced writer, he has written a number of short plays that have been read in Texas, California, Ohio, and Florida.
Ms. Jackson is also a teacher of dramatic arts at TCT. Her play - "The Wild West Adventures of Nehi Jones'' - is a melodrama based on the book of Nehemiah.
"The Bathroom Window'' is a family story of life and death. Its authors are the members of a creative writing class, who began working on the play as a result of an assignment by Dr. Dana Adams at UT Tyler.
