May 30: We Are a Representative Democracy
Response to Kevin Braly's letter about the smoking ban:
Kevin, a local election on the smoking ban would be a cost-consuming project for the city of Tyler to approve when we have more important things to focus on, like expanding public transportation in Smith County and improving recreational activities. We already voted on this issue when we elected the sitting council members to represent us.

We are not a Democracy, we are a representative Democracy. That means if you want leaders to vote your own views into law, you had better elect someone that represents those views. Otherwise, wait until the next election opportunity to pick someone you are similar to in values and thinking.
As for my own take on the smoking ban, I am not phased. I don't care to smoke in public places anyway. I do believe there should be a special exemption for bars. Otherwise, you won't see me jumping up and down demanding the right to smoke in front of an asthma patient. I am happy to smoke in my vehicle, on the side of buildings where general traffic is not present and, of course, on my patio. Speaking of, I don't even smoke in my own home.
