GUN BARREL CITY — A registered sex offender has been charged in the abduction, beating and sexual assault of a 63-year-old woman he allegedly pushed into an abandoned well last week.

He remains in the county jail on bonds totaling $167,500.

Suspect Charged After Abducted Woman Rescued From Well
The woman told the Tyler Morning Telegraph she answered a knock at her door shortly after midnight last Friday and found Cannon asking to use her phone.

Cannon then allegedly attacked the woman, beating her with the butt of a rifle before he assaulted her and dragged her to her car in the driveway. After driving for several hours, he drove into a wooded area and pushed her into the well.

The woman said she was in the well 16 hours before family members found her and she was rescued.

She is now home from the hospital recuperating from her injuries.

Sheriff’s officials said Cannon registered as a sex offender with the department less than 48 hours before the attack on the woman.

Records show he was detained in the Texas Youth Commission for molesting a 5-year-old girl when he was a juvenile.

Cannon and a juvenile were found in the woman’s car hours after she was pushed into the well. The juvenile is not believed to have been a participant in the crime.
