Planning And Zoning Commissioners OK Hotel Construction
By CINDY MALLETTE
Staff Writer

Planning and Zoning commissioners approved a zoning change on Tuesday that will allow for construction of a three-story hotel on McDonald Road.

The item was tabled at the last Planning and Zoning meeting because commissioners felt the final site plan needed a few adjustments to meet the needs of adjacent neighborhoods.

Commissioners recommended that the planned four-story Staybridge Suites hotel be reduced to three stories and that a green zone of tall evergreen trees be constructed as a buffer between the hotel and a residential area nearby.

The builders accepted the recommendations and presented a new site plan to the commission on Tuesday.

Commissioners approved the plan unanimously.

"They did all of the things you have to do to be a good neighbor," said Planning Director Barbara Holly. "They listened to all of the recommendations, and it passed."

Commissioners also took action on the following items at Tuesday's regular meeting:

  • Approved a zoning change for 1120 Medical Drive.

  • Tabled a zoning change request for 2803 E. Erwin St.

  • Approved plats for 24.92 acres near the intersection of Woodland Hills Drive and Old Jacksonville Highway; 184 acres near the intersection of Grande Boulevard and Old Jacksonville Highway; 1.49 acres near the intersection of CR 132 and Farm-to-Market 2813; 16.58 acres near the intersection of FM 850 and CR 213; and 23.98 acres near the intersection of U.S. Highway 271 and State Highway 155.

  • Denied plats for 26.7 acres at the intersection of County Road 2124 and Old Tyler Road; 4.45 acres near the intersection of North Glenwood Boulevard and Garden Valley Road; and 26.7 acres near the intersection of CR 2124 and Old Tyler Road.

  • Approved the partial vacation of two lots, roughly half-an-acre, at the Oasis South subdivision.

  • Approved a preliminary plat for 4.25 acres near the intersection of Roy Road and Thompson Place.
